PG for UPSC Aspirants in Delhi: Where to Stay and What to Check
Where UPSC aspirants live in Delhi, what a PG costs near the coaching hubs, and the study, food and safety checks that matter when you will spend a year or more there.
On this page
The right PG for UPSC aspirants is not the cheapest or the fanciest one. It is the one where you can study ten hours a day, eat properly and sleep well, for a year or more. Delhi has two big coaching hubs, and each has its own kind of PG. This guide compares them and lists what to check before you settle in.
Where UPSC aspirants stay in Delhi
Old Rajinder Nagar and Karol Bagh
Old Rajinder Nagar is the best-known UPSC hub, full of coaching institutes, libraries and bookshops, with Karol Bagh right next to it. Most English-medium aspirants look here first. The Blue Line metro (Karol Bagh and Rajendra Place stations) makes it easy to reach the rest of the city.
On 10 October 2026, LSC Smart Living listed 63 PGs in Karol Bagh, from about ₹6,000 to ₹35,000 a month, and 50 of them include meals. Browse PGs in Karol Bagh and PGs in Old Rajinder Nagar.
Mukherjee Nagar and GTB Nagar
Mukherjee Nagar in North Delhi is the other big hub, popular with Hindi-medium aspirants and those preparing for other government exams. GTB Nagar metro on the Yellow Line is close by. We listed 72 PGs in Mukherjee Nagar, from about ₹4,500 to ₹15,000 a month, with 60 including meals. See PGs in Mukherjee Nagar and PGs in GTB Nagar.
What makes a good PG for UPSC aspirants
You will spend more time in this room than anywhere else. Judge it like a study space, not just a bed.
- A real study table and chair for each person, with a good reading light. Many rooms have only a bed and a cupboard.
- Quiet hours. Ask whether the PG has quiet hours, and visit once in the evening to hear the noise for yourself.
- Fewer sharers. Double sharing is usually the best balance of cost and focus. Triple sharing saves money but costs sleep.
- Internet that works. Online tests and lectures need stable Wi-Fi. Ask other residents how it holds up in the evening.
- Food you can live on. Ask for the weekly menu and whether meals are cooked on site. A good diet over a long preparation matters.
- Distance to your coaching and library. A ten-minute walk saves an hour a day compared with a bus ride.
Safety comes first
The basement flooding in Old Rajinder Nagar in July 2024, in which three aspirants lost their lives, was a painful reminder that safety is not optional. When you visit any PG or study space:
- Avoid rooms or libraries in basements without proper exits and ventilation.
- Check for fire extinguishers, clear staircases and a second way out.
- Look at the wiring, the water tank and how the building drains in the rain.
- Make sure the gate, the CCTV and the warden's number actually work.
If something feels unsafe, walk away. There are plenty of other rooms.
Budgeting for a long preparation
Plan for the total cost, not just the rent. A realistic monthly budget includes rent with meals, electricity if it is billed separately, coaching and library fees, books and test series, travel and personal expenses. Ask each PG for the full monthly figure in writing, and check the deposit and notice period so you can move if you need to.
Finding and visiting PGs
Shortlist three PGs close to your coaching centre and visit them on the same day. Every listing on LSC Smart Living has Call and WhatsApp buttons you can use without signing up. Homes in and around Karol Bagh are handled by the LSC Karol Bagh team, who can line up visits for you. You can also browse all PGs in Delhi and filter by gender, meals and budget.
A calm room, good food and a short walk to class will not clear the exam for you, but they remove three things you would otherwise worry about every day.
